June drop

Definition

The natural shedding of a proportion of set fruitlets in early summer, by which a tree reduces a crop it cannot carry. It is normal and self-correcting, not a disorder.

Subject
Orchard

In more detail

Poorly pollinated fruitlets, with few viable seeds, are shed preferentially, so June drop also acts as a quality filter. A heavy drop after a cold flowering usually means poor fertilisation rather than tree stress. The timing shifts with latitude and season despite the name.
