Orchard renewal

Also written replanting. Each is a name for the same thing, which is why none of them has an entry of its own.

Definition

Replacing failing or unproductive trees, either individually within a standing orchard or by clearing and replanting a block. Renewal planning is what keeps an orchard in production across generations.

In more detail

Replanting into the same ground raises the problem of specific apple replant disease, a soil-borne complex that stunts young trees planted where apples have grown before. Practical answers are moving the rows, resting the ground, or planting into gaps rather than into old tree positions.
