Trained panel

Definition

A group of assessors calibrated against reference standards to use an agreed vocabulary consistently, so that their scores measure the drink rather than their preferences.

In more detail

Training is about agreement, not refinement of taste: panellists learn what the panel means by "astringent" or "cooked apple" by tasting reference solutions, and are screened for reliability. A trained panel produces data; a group of enthusiasts produces opinions, and the two should not be presented as the same thing.
