Blind tasting

Definition

Assessing a drink without knowing its identity, producer or price. Where the server also does not know, the tasting is double blind.

Blinding is a control on expectation, which measurably alters perception: labels, colour and price all shift scores in controlled experiments. It is standard in competition judging and in any producer trial whose result is meant to be believed.
