Huffcap

Definition

A traditional name element attached to a group of perry pears — Hendre Huffcap, Red Huffcap, Black Huffcap among them — and, older still, a word for a drink strong enough to lift the cap off the drinker’s head.

Perry

In more detail

The huffcap pears are not a single cultivar or a proven family; the name travelled between orchards and was applied to tall, vigorous trees with strong perry. It is a good example of why perry pear identification needs collections and DNA work rather than names alone.
