No aroma descriptors are recorded for Graniwinkle, and for a great deal of cider fruit that is a finding rather than a gap. Bittersweet apples in particular contribute tannin, sugar and body while being close to aromatically mute, and most of what a cider made from them smells of was produced by the fermentation rather than carried in by the fruit. Tasted at this site

Color straw, moderately sharp. Clean, crisp and fruity light bodied cider with short finish and refreshing aftertaste of melon, currant, honey and dried fruit. Would work well as Champagne style cider or blend.

Graniwinkle belongs to the group of American cider apples that survive as names attached to accessions rather than as living traditions. It is listed with Harrison and Campfield in early accounts of New Jersey cider, described as sweet, and then largely disappears from the record. What can be said about it honestly is short, and this record says only that much.

The variant spellings are themselves informative. Nineteenth-century American nursery catalogues were not working from a shared register, and a fruit could travel between counties collecting orthography. Resolving those spellings to one cultivar is the identity problem that runs through the whole of North American heritage pomology, and it is why the germplasm collections rather than the orchards are now the authority on what a name means.

For a maker, Graniwinkle is a curiosity to be pressed into a blend and observed, not a cultivar with a body of practice behind it. The blend profile here is marked as described rather than measured, and its bands are wide because the evidence genuinely does not narrow them.
