Is cloudy cider a sign that something is wrong?
In short
Sometimes, and sometimes the opposite. An unfiltered cider that has not been fined or cold-stabilised holds yeast and colloidal material in suspension, and that is a normal outcome of a deliberate choice not to strip it out. Sidra natural, much farmhouse cider and any bottle-conditioned cider are cloudy by design.
But haze also arises from things that are wrong: pectin that was never broken down, starch from unripe fruit, protein instability, metal contamination, or a microbial population growing in the bottle. These are faults with causes and remedies.
The way to tell them apart is not the cloudiness itself but what accompanies it — smell, taste, whether the haze settles, whether it appeared after packaging, and whether the cider is gaining gas it should not have.

A misconception worth clearing up
This comparison exists partly because of the claim below, which is repeated often enough that most readers arrive holding it.
Cloudy cider is unfiltered and therefore authentic; clear cider has been processed.
What is actually the case: Both halves are unreliable. A cider can clear completely on its own given time and cold, with nothing removed; and a haze can be a pectin, starch or microbial fault that no tradition would accept. Appearance is evidence about process, not about integrity.

Filtration removes suspended solids and, at fine enough grades, the organisms too; leaving it out keeps whatever is in suspension, including material that carries aroma and texture.
