Is unfiltered cider better than filtered?
In short
Filtration passes the cider through a medium that retains particles above a chosen size. Coarse filtration polishes the appearance; sterile filtration at around half a micron removes yeast and most bacteria, and can therefore substitute for pasteurisation as a stabilising step.
An unfiltered cider keeps its suspended solids: yeast fragments, colloidal material, protein and polysaccharide complexes. Some of that carries aroma and contributes to mouthfeel, so filtration is not sensorily neutral, and tight filtration strips more than loose filtration does.
The trade is between clarity and stability on one side and retained colloidal material on the other. Neither is a mark of quality: a brilliantly clear cider may have been filtered or may simply have been racked patiently, and a cloudy one may be unfiltered by intent or hazy by fault.

A misconception worth clearing up
This comparison exists partly because of the claim below, which is repeated often enough that most readers arrive holding it.
Cloudy cider is unfiltered and therefore better made.
What is actually the case: Cloudiness has many causes. Intentional suspension of yeast is one; pectin haze, starch haze, protein instability and microbial spoilage are others, and those are faults. Clarity is not a quality axis in either direction — it tells you about the process, not the standard.

Cloudy vs clear
Cloudiness can be intentional suspended yeast and colloids, or it can be a pectin, starch, protein or microbial haze that is a genuine fault. The appearance alone does not tell you which.
Pasteurised vs unpasteurised
Pasteurisation uses heat to kill the organisms that would otherwise continue changing the cider in the package; leaving it out keeps the cider alive, and with it both the potential to develop and the potential to spoil.
