Haze vs sediment
Is the stuff at the bottom of the bottle the same as cloudiness in the glass?
In short
Sediment is a deposit: yeast from a bottle conditioning, lees carried over at bottling, or tartrate and pectate that has come out of solution. It sits on the bottom, it can be left behind by pouring carefully, and in a bottle-conditioned cider it is expected.
Haze is suspended material fine enough not to settle. Pectin haze, starch haze, protein instability, metal haze and microbial haze all persist, and none of them will drop out however long the bottle stands.
That behaviour is the practical test. A cloudy cider that clears to a clean deposit after a day upright was carrying sediment; one that stays uniformly cloudy has a haze, and a haze has a cause worth identifying — some causes are cosmetic and some indicate a live population in the package.

A misconception worth clearing up

Sediment in a bottle means the cider has spoiled.
What is actually the case: In a bottle-conditioned cider the sediment is the yeast that carbonated it, and its presence is what the method requires. Spoilage shows as a haze that will not settle, usually with an aroma to match — not as a clean deposit under bright cider.
