Noble chafer
Definition
A rare metallic-green beetle, Gnorimus nobilis, whose larvae develop in the decaying heartwood of old fruit trees. It is used as an indicator species for high-quality traditional orchard habitat.

The insect matters to cider because its distribution maps onto surviving standard orchards in the three counties and the south-west. Its presence is evidence that an orchard has been continuously old and undisturbed, which is a condition no replanting can create quickly.

Traditional orchard
An orchard of widely spaced standard or half-standard trees on vigorous rootstocks, with a permanent grassland floor that is grazed or mown. In the United Kingdom it is a recognised priority habitat.

An old tree carrying the features that come with age — hollowing trunk, decaying heartwood, dead limbs, loose bark and cavities — which together make it habitat for species that live nowhere else in the orchard.
