What it is
An orchard of widely spaced, open-grown trees standing over long-established grassland is a habitat mosaic rather than a crop field, and in the United Kingdom traditional orchards are identified as a priority habitat on exactly that basis. Biodiversity management here means deciding what to retain and what to remove: veteran trees with decaying heartwood, standing and fallen deadwood, hollow trunks, sunlit bark carrying lichen and moss, an unimproved sward, and the hedges, scrub and rough margins around the block. It is a set of decisions about what an orchard is for, taken on ground that is also expected to produce fruit.
Why it is used
- The habitat features concerned take many decades to form and are removed in an afternoon, so retention decisions are effectively irreversible on any human timescale.
- Traditional orchard area in England has declined substantially since the middle of the twentieth century, which makes the remaining stock disproportionately important to the species that depend on it.
- Some of the species involved are narrowly dependent on this habitat and occur almost nowhere else in Britain, so an individual orchard can carry national significance for them.
- Agri-environment payments and habitat designations now form part of the income of some traditional orchards, so the biodiversity condition of the site has a direct financial dimension.
How it works
- Open-grown trees carry heavy limbs and, as they age, lose them; the resulting wounds admit heartwood decay fungi, and the slowly rotting heartwood of a still-living tree is the specific resource that saproxylic invertebrates need.
- Widely spaced trees are lit on all sides, so their trunks and limbs carry epiphytic lichen and bryophyte communities that a closed canopy would shade out.
- Grassland that has never been ploughed, reseeded or heavily fertilised holds fungi and plants that improved pasture loses within a few years, and there is no quick way to put them back.
- The mosaic itself matters: blossom for pollinators in spring, fallen fruit for birds and mammals in autumn, cavities for hole-nesting birds and roosting bats, and rough margins for the nesting and overwintering that the orchard floor alone does not provide.

The flagship species in British orchards is the noble chafer, Gnorimus nobilis, a beetle whose larvae develop in the decaying heartwood of living veteran trees and which in England is concentrated in the traditional orchards of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. It is a useful example precisely because it is inconvenient: it needs the trees a fruit grower would remove, at the age at which they are least productive, and it cannot be provided for by planting. The same is broadly true of the epiphytic lichen communities on old open-grown trunks, of hole-nesting birds using cavities that form only in decaying wood, and of the waxcap fungi of old orchard grassland. In every case the resource is a product of age, low disturbance and low fertility.
This is where sentimentality has to be set aside. The features that carry the biological value are the same ones that depress the fruit yield: veteran trees crop irregularly and are slow and expensive to harvest, deadwood in a canopy is also a reservoir of canker and rot, low sward fertility limits the nitrogen reaching the fruit, and low density means a fraction of the fruit per hectare that a bush block produces. Much of the traditional orchard that survives in England survives because it was not worth the cost of grubbing, not because it was consciously conserved. A modern intensive orchard on the same ground would produce far more fruit and support a fraction of the species, and that trade is real rather than rhetorical.
What a manager actually decides is where on that gradient a given orchard sits. A working commercial standard orchard can retain deadwood in the crown of trees that are structurally sound, keep fallen wood on site rather than burning it, leave hollow veterans standing where they are safe, avoid fertilising or reseeding old grassland, and plant a few replacement trees every year so there is always a next generation coming — all without abandoning the crop. What it cannot do is have both the maximum yield and the maximum habitat value. The comparable systems abroad face the same arithmetic: Austrian and Bavarian Streuobst is protected and supported partly on cultural and landscape grounds because its fruit economics alone would not sustain it, and the Norman pré-verger has declined as dairying intensified and the trees became an obstruction to the grassland rather than a second crop from it.
