What it is
Viscum album grows on apple as a hemiparasite: it makes its own sugars by photosynthesis but takes water and dissolved minerals from the host, tapping directly into its wood. Apple is one of its most favoured hosts, and in parts of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Somerset, and in Normandy, orchard trees can carry very heavy infestations. Management means deciding how much to tolerate, cutting out established clumps before they dominate a limb, and in some places harvesting the growth for the winter market — which turns a parasite into a modest secondary crop rather than simply a problem.
Why it is used
- Heavy mistletoe growth draws water and nutrients from limbs that are also expected to carry fruit, and infested branches lose vigour and eventually die back.
- Large evergreen clumps shade the host’s own leaves and add substantial weight and wind resistance to a limb, which raises the risk of breakage in winter storms and under snow.
- Left uncontrolled, mistletoe spreads readily from tree to tree within an orchard, so an untreated block becomes progressively harder and more expensive to bring back.
- Where a market exists, cutting mistletoe in winter both controls it and returns something, so the control operation need not be a pure cost.
How it works
- Germinating seed produces a haustorium that penetrates the bark and connects to the host xylem, drawing water and mineral nutrients; the connection is permanent and an established plant regrows from tissue within the branch if only the visible growth is removed.
- Because it transpires freely while taking host water, a heavy mistletoe load acts on the tree much like an added drought stress in a dry summer.
- Birds — the mistle thrush and, increasingly in Britain, the blackcap — spread it by wiping sticky seeds onto bark or voiding them onto branches, which is why infestation appears in the upper crown and on the outer limbs first.
- Effective control means cutting back into host wood well beyond the point of attachment, since removing only the green growth leaves the haustorial system intact to resprout.

Mistletoe on apple is genuinely a regional phenomenon rather than a general one. It is concentrated in the English south-west midlands and the Welsh borders, and in northern France, and it is scarce or absent across most other apple-growing areas including nearly all of North America, where the European species does not occur. Within its range, traditional orchards are among its most reliable habitats precisely because they contain old, open-grown, lightly pruned apple trees — the conditions it needs. Its decline in some districts has tracked the loss of those orchards, which is why it appears in orchard conservation surveys as an indicator rather than only as a pest.
The winter market is the reason mistletoe has an ambiguous status in the Three Counties. Cut mistletoe has been traded for the Christmas season for a very long time, with a market centred on the Worcestershire and Herefordshire border, and orchard owners there have often treated an infested block as a resource to be cut over rather than a problem to be eradicated. That practice happens to be reasonable horticulture: regular winter cutting keeps the load on the trees down without ever removing the plant entirely, which is close to what a manager balancing tree health against habitat value would choose anyway. In Normandy the same species is treated much more consistently as a nuisance and cut out where orchards are actively worked.
The judgement a grower makes is about proportion. A few clumps on a mature tree do it no measurable harm and support a small set of specialist insects and a winter food source for birds. A tree carrying dozens of large clumps is being drained, is heavier and more brittle than it should be, and will decline. On a veteran tree near the end of its life the sensible answer is often to leave it alone, since the mistletoe is not what will kill it; on a productive tree in its prime, cutting back into sound host wood every few winters keeps the balance. Attempting eradication across a heavily infested traditional orchard is rarely realistic, and is not obviously desirable.
