Veteran tree
Definition
An old tree carrying the features that come with age — hollowing trunk, decaying heartwood, dead limbs, loose bark and cavities — which together make it habitat for species that live nowhere else in the orchard.

Fruit trees become veterans early by woodland standards: an apple can show veteran features at seventy years and a perry pear at well over a century. Managing them means retaining deadwood rather than tidying it, reducing crowns to lengthen life rather than felling, and planting successors long before the veterans fail.

Traditional orchard
An orchard of widely spaced standard or half-standard trees on vigorous rootstocks, with a permanent grassland floor that is grazed or mown. In the United Kingdom it is a recognised priority habitat.

A rare metallic-green beetle, *Gnorimus nobilis*, whose larvae develop in the decaying heartwood of old fruit trees. It is used as an indicator species for high-quality traditional orchard habitat.

A tree grown on a vigorous rootstock with a clear trunk of about 1.8 to 2.1 metres before the first branch, forming a large canopy that can be grazed or mown beneath.
