Calories in cider
How many calories are in cider, and where do they come from?
In short
Almost all of the energy in cider comes from two things: ethanol, which supplies about 7 kilocalories per gram, and any residual sugar, which supplies about 4. These are the conversion factors set out in the EU food information regulation, and they are the same ones a nutrition label is calculated from.
That makes the figure computable rather than mysterious. A 500 ml cider at 5 per cent ABV contains about 19.7 g of ethanol, contributing roughly 138 kcal, plus whatever the residual sugar adds.
CiderHQ gives the arithmetic rather than a table of per-product figures, because a calorie figure for a named cider is a measurement of that product and not something a knowledge site can honestly supply.
The two contributions
Ethanol is the larger contributor in most ciders and it is the one people overlook, because alcohol is not thought of as food. Its energy value is about 7 kcal per gram — closer to fat, at 9, than to sugar or protein at 4 — and none of it is optional. Any cider with alcohol in it has those calories in it.
Residual sugar is the second contributor, and it is where ciders diverge sharply. A fully fermented dry cider may contain only a few grams of sugar per litre and contributes almost nothing from that source. A back-sweetened medium or sweet cider may contain 30, 50 or more grams per litre, and an ice cider a great deal more.
Everything else is negligible. Cider contains small quantities of organic acids, glycerol, polysaccharides and phenolic compounds, and none of them contributes meaningfully to the energy total. There is essentially no fat and essentially no protein.
Perry differs in one specific way: sorbitol, which pears carry in quantity and which yeast does not ferment, remains in the finished drink. Under the same regulation, polyols such as sorbitol are assigned an energy conversion factor of about 2.4 kcal per gram — lower than sugar, but not zero.
Doing the arithmetic
Start with the ethanol. Multiply the volume in millilitres by the ABV as a decimal to get millilitres of ethanol; multiply by 0.789 to get grams; multiply by 7 to get kilocalories.
For a 500 ml cider at 5 per cent: 500 × 0.05 = 25 ml of ethanol; 25 × 0.789 = 19.7 g; 19.7 × 7 = about 138 kcal from alcohol alone.
Then add the sugar. Residual sugar in grams per litre, multiplied by the volume in litres, multiplied by 4. If that same 500 ml cider carries 30 g/L of residual sugar, that is 15 g, contributing about 60 kcal — giving roughly 198 kcal for the bottle.
The same method applied to a pint of 7.5 per cent dry cider gives 568 × 0.075 = 42.6 ml of ethanol, 33.6 g, and about 235 kcal from alcohol, with very little added from sugar because the cider is dry. A strong dry cider can therefore carry more energy than a weaker sweet one, which is the opposite of what most people assume.

Why cider labels rarely carry the numbers
Nutrition declarations are required for most pre-packed food, but alcoholic beverages above 1.2 per cent ABV have historically been outside that requirement under the EU food information regulation, and the position has been the subject of ongoing policy work in both the EU and the UK. Many producers now provide the information voluntarily, and some markets have moved further than others.
Where a producer does declare energy content, it will have been calculated using the same conversion factors described above, applied to their own analysis of the product. That is a better figure than any general estimate, because it uses the actual residual sugar.
Because the requirements are in flux, this record deliberately does not state what any particular label must show. Anyone needing the current rule should check it with the regulator.
What this does and does not tell you
It tells you where the energy in a glass of cider comes from, and it lets you compare two ciders on a like-for-like basis if you know their strengths and their sweetness.
It does not make a case for any particular cider being a better choice than another, and CiderHQ does not offer one. A lower-calorie alcoholic drink is a lower-calorie alcoholic drink; it is not a healthy one, and the World Health Organization’s position is that no level of alcohol consumption is safe for health.
It is worth saying plainly that "low calorie" and "low carb" marketing on alcoholic drinks addresses only the sugar half of the arithmetic. A dry cider is low in sugar because the yeast converted that sugar into ethanol, which carries more energy per gram than the sugar did.

The instrument behind the "contains sulphites" declaration and the alcoholic-strength labelling rule. Read on 2026-08-24 in the assimilated text maintained on legislation.gov.uk, which is the version in force for Great Britain and keeps the EU numbering. Two provisions matter to cider and both are widely misquoted: the sulphite threshold is 10 mg/L rather than a percentage, and a labelled cider strength carries a tolerance of a full percentage point either way — twice what still grape wine is allowed.

Registered separately from the WHO fact sheet because the Group 1 classification is IARC’s and lives in the Monographs rather than on the fact sheet. Several pages here previously attributed it to the fact sheet, which does not carry it. IARC is part of WHO, so the claim was never wrong — it was cited to the wrong document, which is precisely the failure this evidence model exists to catch. The volume was opened on 2026-08-24 and the agent name confirmed: IARC classifies *consumption of alcoholic beverages*, not “alcohol” as a chemical. The distinction is not pedantry — it is the difference between a statement about a behaviour and a statement about a molecule.
