A Long Island apple of the early eighteenth century that became America’s first export fruit, and one of the few colonial cultivars with both the acid and the aromatic complexity to make cider on its own.

Humid continental, with cold winters and warm summers moderated by the Finger Lakes — a sharper seasonal swing than any of the European cider regions whose fruit the collection holds, and warm enough in late summer to bring acid down faster than a maritime autumn does.

Late October, and it needs the full season: picked early it is merely green and sour, with none of the aromatic development that makes it worth pressing.

Established as a single-varietal cider
One of the small number of American cultivars that carries a single-varietal cider on aroma alone. It is light-bodied and offers nothing at the finish, but the perfume is unmistakable and is the whole argument for making it this way.
About Newtown Pippin
Newtown Pippin came off a tree in what is now the borough of Queens, and by the middle of the eighteenth century it was being shipped to London. It is the only American apple of the colonial period to have had a genuine international reputation as fruit, and Virginian growers in Albemarle County built a nineteenth-century export business on it under a name of their own. That double identity — Newtown in New York, Albemarle in Virginia — is one of the most durable synonym pairs in American pomology and is recorded above rather than split into two records.
For cider its interest is aromatic. The juice carries a piney, resinous, faintly herbal perfume that is very unusual in an apple and that comes through fermentation largely intact, which most fruit aromas do not. Set against firm green acid, that gives a cider with an immediately recognisable nose and very little else — no tannin, moderate body, a finish that ends where the acid ends. It is a component fruit that occasionally works as a soloist.
The measurement above is New York fruit, and the caveat matters more than usual for this cultivar. Albemarle County has a longer and warmer growing season than the Finger Lakes, and the same tree there ripens further, drops acid and gains sugar. A Virginian Newtown and a New York Newtown are not interchangeable juices, and CiderHQ holds no Virginian analysis to set beside the Cornell one. Recording only what exists, with its site attached, is the honest form of that gap.
In the orchard it is demanding: biennial, scab-prone and susceptible to bitter pit. The scab is largely cosmetic for a pressing crop, which is one of the few places where a cider grower has an easier problem than a market grower.
Names, origin and identity
Cultivar naming is the hardest problem in cider fruit data. The same tree carries different names across ten miles, and two different trees have shared a name for two centuries.

One of the better-documented American origins: the Newtown association is carried by early colonial records and by the fruit’s own name, and the parent tree’s location was known and marked well into the nineteenth century.
