About Ralls Janet
Ralls Janet is the record in this file that most clearly shows how far an American farm apple could travel. It is a modest Virginian keeper whose distinguishing feature is that it blooms extremely late and therefore misses the spring frosts that empty an orchard in a valley bottom. Southern growers called it Neverfail and planted it where nothing else would crop reliably.
In the nineteenth century it went to Japan with the wave of Western agricultural introductions, where the name became Genitin. Decades later it was crossed with Red Delicious at the national horticultural research station in Aomori, and the result was Fuji, which is now among the most widely planted apples on earth and is pressed for cider in China, Japan, the United States and beyond. A cultivar with no cider reputation of its own stands behind a very large volume of modern cider through its offspring.
On its own merits as pressing fruit it is unremarkable — mild, moderately sweet, lightly aromatic, without tannin. It belongs in this file for its very late bloom, which is a genuine orchard tool in frost-prone sites, and for the genetic line that runs from a Virginian farm to a modern global crop.
