Aroma

No aroma descriptors are recorded for Ashton Brown Jersey, and for a great deal of cider fruit that is a finding rather than a gap. Bittersweet apples in particular contribute tannin, sugar and body while being close to aromatically mute, and most of what a cider made from them smells of was produced by the fermentation rather than carried in by the fruit. CiderHQ publishes the absence rather than filling the space with descriptors nothing supports.

Occasionally bottled alone by producers who have enough of it. It has more to say than most full bittersweets but still finishes without acid.

About Ashton Brown Jersey

Ashton Brown Jersey is one of the few English cider apples whose name records an act of selection rather than a chance discovery. Long Ashton took Somerset Brown Jersey material, picked a line worth propagating and put its own prefix on it, and the resulting fruit is a full bittersweet of real quality: high tannin, very low acid, good sugar, and a finish that lasts.

It is also a poor commercial proposition, and the reason is simply that it does not crop. A shy and irregular bearer of very late fruit is difficult to justify in an orchard planted for tonnage, and Ashton Brown Jersey has stayed a minority cultivar throughout its life. Where it is grown it tends to be by producers making small volumes of cider intended to age, for whom a few trees of something structural is worth more than another row of bulk fruit.

The naming is the usual West Country tangle. "Brown Jersey" was a Somerset name for dark-skinned full bittersweets generally, and applying it to any single tree in an old orchard is a guess. The Long Ashton prefix at least fixes one line of it, which is what the selection was for.
